John Campbell (1781 - 1866)
John was born Mar. 15, 1781, in Scotland or N. Ireland; d. Mar.
18, 1866, in what is now Pittsburgh's north side. Married in Lancaster
Co., PA to
Elizabeth Bell. John was the 3rd of 8 children (and oldest son) of
Joseph Campbell, b. 1748, in
Scotland, d. 1824 in Nelson, PA, (originally called Beecher's Island); and Mary Harper, b. 1749, in Scotland, d. 1844 in
Nelson.
John's youngest brother James was born in N. Ireland, but it's
uncertain whether the older children were born in Scotland or North
Ireland. In N. Ireland, they lived in Derry/Londonderry, and in Country
Antrim. John's parents, and his youngest siblings sailed from Londonderry
to Perth Amboy, NJ in 1810 and arrived in Nelson early in
1811.
John Campbell and wife Elizabeth moved to a farm near Pittsburgh shortly after they married, before his parents came to America. He and Elizabeth never came to Nelson. John's oldest sister Sarah (often called Sally) came to America about 1800. John and his older sister, Mary, may not have come until 1806.
John Campbell's sister Mary married a John Hazlett and remained in Lancaster Co. until her death in 1824. After Mary's death, her husband and children moved to a farm near John's.
John and Elizabeth had twelve children, presumably all born in Allegheny Co., PA, in what is now Pittsburgh's north side:
